Sulmona
Overview
Sulmona is a city of about 22,000 inhabitants located in the heart of the Abruzzo region, in the Peligna Valley, at the foot of the Majella massif and surrounded by some of the most striking mountain landscapes of the central Apennines. An ancient settlement of the Peligni people and later a Roman municipality, it is known worldwide as the birthplace of the Latin poet Ovid and for its centuries-old tradition of artisanal confetti (sugar-coated almonds). Rich in history, art, and tradition, Sulmona preserves an elegant historic center characterized by monumental squares, churches, Renaissance palaces, and the impressive Medieval Aqueduct built under Manfred of Swabia in the 13th century. Due to the quality of its architectural heritage, it has long been nicknamed the “Siena of Abruzzo.”
Piana delle Mele (Guardiagrele)
Overview
The Piana delle Mele, in the municipality of Guardiagrele, is a rural area located on the slopes of the Majella massif in Abruzzo, Italy. It is characterized by gentle hills and wide agricultural landscapes that frame the historic hill town. The scenery, typical of the central Apennines, alternates between cultivated fields, orchards, and woodland areas, offering particularly scenic views throughout the year. As the name suggests, the area has historically been linked to apple cultivation and other local agricultural products, which are part of Guardiagrele’s long-standing rural tradition. It represents a meeting point between nature and countryside culture, where farming activities are closely connected to the customs and heritage of local communities.
