Agliè

Overview

Agliè (‘Ajé’ in the local vernacular) is a small town built over the ruins of the ancient Roman ‘Alladium’. The imposing Ducal Castle of Agliè, the symbol of the town, has a distinctive architecture that combines various building styles, and is one of the most beautiful Residences of the Royal House of Savoy in Piedmont. The old town is a maze of narrow alleys and charming arcades. The church of Santa Marta, neat and simple, is made of cotto tiles and features an iconic triangular bell tower, built in 1787.

The beauty of the town was a source of inspiration for poet Guido Gozzano, who used to spend the summer days in his countryside retreat, the Art Nouveau ‘Villa Il Meleto’.

Agliè was home to one of the Olivetti headquarters, where the iconic ‘Lettera 22’ typewriter was produced.

Speciality food

Traditional local specialties include the Torcetti di Agliè, which were a favourite with the Savoy family. If you are in town in April, make sure you visit the yearly ‘Sagra del Torcetto’.

Wines and beverage

Wine is another source of pride for the town. The Erbaluce vineyards, which now belong to the ‘Strade del Vino in Canavese’ network, have been known since the 1600s. The local grape ‘Erbaluce’ is made into exquisite Caluso Passito Doc and Erbaluce di Caluso Doc wines.
