Sibari

Panoramica

Famous in ancient times for its wealth and splendour, Sybaris was founded in the 8th century BC and became renowned throughout the ancient world for its prosperity, refinement and cultural influence. Today, its remarkable Archaeological Park tells the story of the ancient cities of Sybaris, Thurii and Copia. Located in the heart of Calabria’s largest plain, between the sea, fertile agricultural lands and a rich cultural heritage, it is an ideal destination for discovering the historical roots of Calabria.

Food

Riso di Sibari IGP – Grown in the Sibari Plain over 600 hectares, it is a high-quality rice. The Ionian microclimate makes it unique and versatile.

Fichi di Cosenza DOP – Fichi di Cosenza DOP, Dottato variety grown in the Cosenza plain. It thrives in a hilly, well-ventilated area with an ideal balanced climate.

Clementine di Calabria IGP/ Limone di Rocca Imperiale IGP/ Cedro di Calabria – citrus fruits harvested Oct–Feb, sweet and aromatic, symbols of the region.

Drinks

The Piana di Sibari is one of Calabria’s most productive agricultural areas. Alongside wines from the nearby Pollino and Upper Ionian territories, visitors can enjoy juices and liqueurs made from the plain’s renowned citrus fruits. The area’s agricultural wealth has shaped a food and wine tradition deeply connected to its landscape and local crops.

Points of Interest

Sibari Archaeological Park – One of the most important archaeological sites of Magna Graecia, it preserves the remains of the ancient cities of Sybaris, Thurii and Copia. The park offers a fascinating journey through more than a thousand years of history, tracing the evolution of one of the most prosperous centres of the ancient world.

National Archaeological Museum of Sibaritide – Located within the Archaeological Park, the museum houses artefacts unearthed from the Sibaritide excavations, including ceramics, coins, sculptures and everyday objects. Its collections tell the story and showcase the extraordinary cultural richness of the populations that inhabited this territory over the centuries.

Pollino National Park – Just a short distance away, it offers landscapes of extraordinary natural beauty. Italy’s largest protected area extends across Calabria and Basilicata, preserving a unique natural heritage of mountains, gorges, ancient forests and rare species. The symbol of the park is the Pino Loricato, a centuries-old tree that grows on the highest peaks of the southern Apennines.

Villa d'Agri di Marsicovetere

Overview

Villa d’Agri is the main hamlet of the municipality of Marsicovetere, located in the Basilicata region of southern Italy, in the Agri Valley—one of the most important areas of the Lucanian Apennines in terms of both landscape and economy. The settlement stretches along the Agri River valley and is surrounded by hills and mountain ridges that frame a typical Apennine scenery. The area is known for its strategic position within the Val d’Agri, a region that also hosts significant energy and oil extraction activities, alongside a strong agricultural and rural tradition. Villa d’Agri serves as the main residential and commercial hub of the municipality, offering services, businesses, and connections that make it a reference point for nearby communities. Today, the locality combines modern development with strong territorial identity, maintaining its connection to the natural environment and the mountainous landscape of inland Basilicata.
