Matthias Schwarzbacher wins Stage 1 of the Giro Next Gen 2025

Matthias Schwarzbacher (UAE Team Emirates Gen-Z) has won Stage 1 of the Giro Next Gen Carta Giovani Nazionale, the 8.4 km long Rho-Rho Tudor ITT that marked the start of the race and decided the first Maglia Rosa.

Matisse Van Kerckhove (Team Visma | Lease a Bike Development) and Callum Thornley (Red Bull – Bora – Hansgrohe Rookies) finished second and third respectively.

Speaking seconds after the stage finish, the stage winner and Maglia Rosa Matthias Schwarzbacher said: “Because it was a short time trial, I was aiming for the top 10 but I didn’t expect to win. I was probably stronger in the second half but my team-mates who gave me tips before I rode actually advised me to go faster in the first part. Reality is that I had more to give in the second half of the race. I don’t know what this victory means for me, I need time to understand what I have done. I owe this victory to Peter Sagan. He was my inspiration for taking up cycling”.
