Speaking seconds after the stage finish, the stage winner and new Maglia Rosa Jonathan Vervenne said: “This was indeed the longest time trial of my life. Yesterday I was a bit disappointed. I hoped for more [than 16th]. It looks like it was a good warm up for today. I don’t train a lot for short time trials. But longer TTs are better for me in this period. When we were two in the front my sport director told me to open the gas if our lead was coming below two minutes, that’s how I dropped my breakaway companion off. I kept on riding with the idea in my mind that maybe in the finale a small group would join me. I never thought it would be possible to go to the finish alone. Only in the last 5km I realised that it was possible. The Belgian championship for time trial I’ve won twice is also nice but I think this is the best win of my career so far. Every u23 rider wants to win a stage in the Giro NextGen”.
